From Dr. B
Medicare and your teeth, in plain language
Here’s the first thing I tell every Medicare patient: the red, white and blue card doesn’t pay for routine dental care. Original Medicare skips cleanings, fillings, extractions and “items like dentures and implants” (Medicare.gov). Most of my Medicare patients get their dental benefits through a Medicare Advantage plan instead.
The good news: nearly everyone in an individual Medicare Advantage plan has some dental benefit — 98% in 2026 (KFF). The catch is that “dental” can mean cleanings only, or it can include fillings, crowns, dentures and more, up to an annual dollar limit. That’s why we look up your exact plan before you sit in my chair.

Know your coverage
Which Medicare coverage pays for dental care?
| Your coverage | Routine dental (exams, cleanings) | Dentures, crowns, implants | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Original Medicare (Parts A & B) | No | No | Covers only dental care tied to certain medical treatment, like an exam before a heart valve replacement or a transplant. |
| Medigap (Medicare Supplement) | No | No | Medigap plans generally don’t cover dental care (Medicare.gov). |
| Medicare Advantage — preventive dental | Usually yes | No | Exams, cleanings and X-rays only. |
| Medicare Advantage — comprehensive dental | Usually yes | Often, partly | Annual maximum, your share (coinsurance or copay), how often dentures are replaced, in-network rules. |
Comprehensive dental is getting more common: about 84% of Medicare Advantage plans offered it in 2025, and 31% of enrollees had an annual maximum above $2,000 (Health Affairs Forefront, 2025).
Care we see most often
What Medicare-age patients come in for
Our 65+ patients range from “just a cleaning, please” to rebuilding a full smile. These are the visits we do every week.
Cleanings & checkups
Gum health, oral cancer screening and digital X-rays. Nearly 13% of adults 65 and older have untreated tooth decay (CDC), so regular exams matter. Family dentistry
Dentures & partials
Full, partial and immediate dentures, plus relines and repairs. More than 1 in 10 adults aged 65–74, and nearly 1 in 5 over 75, have lost all their teeth (CDC). Dentures
Implants & snap-in dentures
Two to four implants can hold a lower denture firmly in place. Plans cover implants very differently, so we check before you decide. Dental implants
Crowns & bridges
Worn, cracked or root-canal-treated teeth often need a crown to keep working. Crowns & bridges
Dry mouth care
Hundreds of medicines can reduce saliva, and dry mouth raises the risk of decay (NIDCR). Bring your medication list and we’ll help you protect your teeth.
Tooth pain, today
Toothache, broken tooth or a denture that snapped? Call early and we’ll try to see you the same day. Emergency care

Open Enrollment
Choosing a plan for 2027? Check the dental part first.
Medicare Open Enrollment runs October 15 – December 7, 2026; changes start January 1. If you’re already in a Medicare Advantage plan, you can switch once more between January 1 and March 31 (Medicare.gov).
If you know you’ll need dentures, a crown or an implant next year, compare three numbers in each plan’s dental benefit: the annual maximum, your share for major services, and how often dentures are replaced. Medicare’s Plan Finder shows plans by ZIP code.
We don’t sell insurance, but we’re happy to tell you what your current plan covers for the treatment you need.

FAQ
Medicare dental questions
Do you accept my Medicare Advantage plan?
Yes. We accept every Medicare Advantage plan. Call with your member card and we’ll check your dental benefits before your visit.
Do you see patients with Original Medicare only?
Yes. Original Medicare doesn’t pay for routine dental care, so treatment is self-pay. Your consultation is free, and we offer an in-office savings plan and payment options. See insurance & payment.
Does a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan cover dental?
Generally no. Medigap helps with Original Medicare’s costs, not dental care. For dental benefits you need a Medicare Advantage plan with dental or a separate dental plan.
Will my plan pay for dentures?
Many comprehensive Medicare Advantage dental benefits help pay for dentures, usually with an annual maximum, a coinsurance share and a replacement limit (often one set every five years). We confirm your plan’s rules before you decide. Details in my dentures and Medicare article.
Do you accept PPO dental insurance too?
Yes. We accept any PPO dental plan, from employers, retiree plans or individual policies.
