Overview
Emergency dental relief from a team that keeps room for you
Dental pain does not wait for a convenient time, and it rarely gets better on its own. A throbbing toothache often means infection in the nerve; a cracked tooth can split further every time you chew. Getting seen quickly usually means a simpler, less expensive fix — and a lot less suffering.
When you call our North Miami office, tell us what happened and how long it has been going on. We will ask a few quick questions, give you first-aid instructions, and get you in as soon as we can. Your emergency consultation is free, and we accept any PPO and any Medicare dental plan.
At the visit, our first goal is to stop the pain and stabilize the tooth. Then Dr. Shanna Bernkrant explains what caused the problem and your options for fixing it permanently, so you can decide without pressure.
The ADA keeps a short guide to handling a broken tooth and other dental emergencies. For emergency dental care in North Miami, call us first.

First aid while you wait
Emergency dental first aid: what to do right now
Severe toothache
Rinse with warm salt water and floss gently to remove trapped food. Take an over-the-counter pain reliever as directed. Do not put aspirin on the gum — it can burn the tissue.
Knocked-out tooth
Pick it up by the crown, not the root. Rinse briefly without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket. If you can’t, keep it in milk or tucked inside your cheek and get here within an hour.
Broken or chipped tooth
Save any pieces, rinse your mouth and apply a cold compress to the outside of your face to limit swelling. Cover sharp edges with sugar-free gum or dental wax.
Swelling or abscess
A pimple-like bump on the gum, facial swelling or a bad taste can mean infection. Call us right away; infections can spread and need prompt treatment.
Lost crown or filling
Keep the crown. Temporary dental cement from the pharmacy can hold it until your visit. Avoid chewing on that side.

Cost & coverage
Paying for emergency dental care in North Miami
We accept any PPO dental plan and any Medicare dental plan, and we file the claim for you. Coverage for emergency dental care depends on your plan, so we verify your benefits and give you a written estimate before treatment starts — no surprise bills.
No insurance? Your consultation is free, and our in-office savings plan and payment options spread the cost into manageable pieces. We do not publish fixed prices online because the right treatment — and the cost — depends on what we find at your exam.
Your emergency consultation is free. We will explain the cost of any treatment before we begin, and we never start work you have not approved.
FAQ
Emergency dental questions
Is a toothache an emergency?
Severe pain, pain that wakes you up, pain with swelling or fever, or pain that lasts more than a day or two should be seen as soon as possible. Mild, brief sensitivity can usually wait for a regular appointment — but call us if you are unsure.
Can a knocked-out tooth be saved?
Often, if you act fast. Teeth replanted within about 30–60 minutes have the best chance. Keep the tooth moist in milk or in your cheek and come straight in.
Should I go to the ER or the dentist?
Go to the ER for facial swelling that affects breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding, a high fever or a possible broken jaw. For toothaches, broken teeth and lost crowns, a dentist can treat the cause — the ER usually can only manage pain.
Does insurance cover emergency dental visits?
Most PPO and Medicare dental plans cover emergency exams and X-rays. We accept any PPO and any Medicare dental plan, and the emergency consultation itself is free.
What if it happens after hours?
Call (305) 893-4801 and leave a message; we will reach out as soon as the office opens. If you have severe swelling, trouble breathing or a high fever, go to the nearest emergency room.
